Ryan Weible, Director and Performing Arts Center Manager

Ryan WeibleRyan Mark Weible was born and raised in Walnut Creek and attended San Diego State University, where he received his BA in Performance Studies; he then took over the Drama Department at San Ramon Valley High School for the 2002/2003 school year before moving to New York in order to pursue his directorial career, where he remained until his return to the Bay Area last August.  While in NYC, Ryan completed his Master’s degree in Theatre Education at NYU and co-directed III at the Cherry Lane Theatre, which was the recipient of the 2008 “Overall Excellence Award for Outstanding Play” at the New York International Fringe Festival and has recently been selected for publication in The Best Plays of 2008.  Prior to that, Ryan directed several New York premieres: Antique, That’s Amore, and Games People Play.  As an Assistant Director, he worked on the Public Theatre revival of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, which starred Tony Award winner Joanna Gleason (for her creation of the Baker’s Wife in Into The Woods).  Ryan also worked with the world-renowned theatre critic, theorist, and foremost Brecht translator, Eric Bentley, on the Off-Broadway revivals of Threepenny Opera and Mother Courage at the Jean Cocteau Repertory Theatre.  On Broadway, he worked as the Script Supervisor and Assistant to the Librettist on the Broadway production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, starring John Lithgow, and as a Dramaturgical Research Assistant for the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins at Studio 54, starring Neil Patrick Harris.  In addition to his directorial pursuits, Ryan worked for Roundabout Theatre Company’s educational programs and Co-Produced two major events in New York City: the New York Winners’ Workshop and Awards Ceremony for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and the debut CD release concert, “Fifteen Seconds of Grace,” for Tony Award winner Victoria Clark (for her creation of Margaret Johnson in The Light in the Piazza).  In the Bay Area, Ryan’s production of Mel Brooks’ The Producers opened in February to rave reviews (for which he, the cast, and company have received 6 Shellie Award Nominations).  This was his second show for Diablo Theatre Company; the first being Thoroughly Modern Millie, for which he, the cast, and company received four Shellie Awards (including “Best Musical”).  He will be directing Into The Woods for the company in the summer of 2010.  Ryan is also an Adjunct Faculty Member in the Drama Department at Diablo Valley College and just opened the department’s season with the musical, Urinetown.
